If you're reading this, you probably already run Chatbase and just realized its message-credit pricing doesn't map cleanly onto how an online store actually gets used. That's the core mismatch: Chatbase is a horizontal AI agent for customer experience, built to handle chat, email, and voice for any kind of business, and its plans are priced by conversation credits rather than by anything specific to a product catalog, order volume, or storefront traffic.
We compared five real alternatives on the same basis: how deep the ecommerce integration goes, how the AI is actually billed, and what a mid-size store pays once the AI is doing real work, not just the sticker price on the homepage.
How we tested
We looked at four things for every tool: how deep the ecommerce platform integration goes (native app vs. generic embeddable widget), how AI usage is metered and billed, what a store running a realistic conversation volume actually pays per month, and how the vendor's own pricing page describes its AI billing model, not third-party estimates or affiliate roundups.
Every price below comes from the vendor's own live pricing page, checked this week. Screenshots are included so you can verify them yourself.
The comparison table
Tool | Best for | Starting price | AI usage billed as |
|---|
Molin AI | Ecommerce stores on Shopify, Shoprenter, UNAS, or Shoper that want AI trained on their catalog | $19/mo (125 conversations, up to 2,000 products) | Flat monthly tier by conversation and product volume |
Chatbase | Teams that want a general-purpose conversational AI agent across chat, email, and voice | $40/mo (700 message credits) | Message credits per month, tiered by plan |
Tidio | Teams that want live chat and AI in one generic customer service platform | $24.17/mo (100 billable conversations) | Billable conversations, then a separate Lyro AI Agent allowance |
Intercom | Teams that want a strong standalone AI agent (Fin) bolted onto a full helpdesk | $19/seat/mo + $0.99 per Fin AI resolution | Per seat plus per-resolution AI outcome fee |
Botpress | Technical teams that want to build and self-host a fully custom AI agent | $150/mo (250 conversations, billed annually) | Conversation quota plus a separate AI Spend credit pool that auto-recharges |
1. Molin AI
Molin AI is built specifically for ecommerce, not adapted from a general-purpose AI agent platform. It connects directly to Shopify, Shoprenter, UNAS, and Shoper catalogs, so the AI reasons over actual product data, live stock, and order status instead of a knowledge base you have to upload and maintain yourself.
Pricing scales by conversation volume and catalog size rather than by message credits, which matters once you're past the free tier and trying to forecast a monthly bill. The Startup plan is $19/mo for 125 conversations and up to 2,000 products, Growth is $55/mo for 500 conversations and 10,000 products, and Scale is $119/mo for 1,250 conversations and up to 50,000 products. All plans include AI chatbot support and full analytics out of the box, not as a paid add-on.

Best for: shops that want an AI assistant trained on their actual product catalog instead of a generic conversational agent that has to be manually taught every SKU.
2. Chatbase
Chatbase positions itself as "conversational agents for customer experience," built to work across chat, email, and voice for any business type, not specifically for online stores. The Free plan gives 50 message credits/month and 1 member; Hobby is $40/mo for 700 message credits and 2 members; Standard is $150/mo (the popular tier) for 4,000 message credits and 3 members; Pro is $500/mo for 15,000 message credits and 5 members; Enterprise is quote-only.
The core tradeoff: Chatbase is a strong general-purpose agent builder with broad model access and integrations (Stripe, Zendesk, and others at the Standard tier and up), but it has no product-catalog or order-lookup concept built in. You connect it to your store's data yourself, typically through a generic knowledge base upload or a custom integration, rather than getting a native ecommerce connector. Message credits also don't map cleanly to "conversations" the way conversation-based pricing does, so cost at real volume takes some guessing until you've run it for a month.

Best for: teams that want one flexible AI agent across multiple channels and are comfortable building the ecommerce-specific logic themselves.
3. Tidio
Tidio splits its product into two tracks: the Customer service platform (live chat, shared inbox, ticketing) and the Lyro AI Agent, which can be layered on top of Tidio or connected to Zendesk, Salesforce, or another helpdesk you already run. The Starter plan is $24.17/mo for 100 billable conversations and includes 50 one-off Lyro AI Agent conversations; Growth starts at $49.17/mo for 250 conversations. Plus jumps to $300/mo where AI and human conversations are billed separately at lower per-unit rates as you scale, and Premium is custom-priced with a dedicated deployment team.
The core tradeoff: Tidio is a strong generic live-chat tool with AI layered in, not an ecommerce-native assistant. Its own pricing page describes Lyro AI Agent as something you "add to Zendesk, Salesforce, or any other help desk software," which is a tell that the AI itself doesn't natively reason over your product catalog the way a purpose-built ecommerce assistant does. It integrates with Shopify and other platforms, but the AI Agent's cost is a variable on top of your base plan, not included in it.

Best for: teams that want one platform combining human live chat and AI, and are comfortable with AI usage as a metered add-on.
4. Intercom
Intercom's Fin AI Agent is one of the more capable standalone AI agents on the market, and it can be layered onto an existing helpdesk (including Salesforce, HubSpot, or Freshdesk) or run inside Intercom's own platform. Essential is $19/seat/mo, Advanced is $85/seat/mo, and Expert is $132/seat/mo, all billed "From $0.99 per Fin outcome" on top of the seat price. There's also a seatless Fin AI Agent option starting at $0.99 per resolution if you just want the AI layered onto your current helpdesk without buying Intercom's full suite.
The catch for smaller ecommerce teams: the combination of per-seat pricing and per-resolution AI fees can get expensive quickly at real volume, and Intercom's ecommerce depth (product catalog awareness, order lookups) is not as native as a platform built ecommerce-first. It's a strong choice if you specifically want Fin, but you're paying enterprise helpdesk prices to get it.

Best for: teams that specifically want Intercom's Fin AI Agent and are prepared to pay per-seat plus per-resolution pricing for it.
5. Botpress
Botpress is the closest thing to a direct Chatbase competitor: a general-purpose AI agent builder aimed at technical teams who want to design custom conversation flows rather than use a pre-built ecommerce assistant. The Free plan covers 25 conversations/month; Plus is $150/mo (billed annually) for 250 conversations, three seats, and $25 of included AI usage; Team is $750/mo for 1,500 conversations, unlimited seats, and $150 of included AI usage. Conversation overages cost $65 per 100 on Plus and $50 per 100 on Team, and once AI usage hits 95% of its included allowance, Botpress auto-purchases a $10 AI Spend credit grant that currently cannot be turned off.
The tradeoff is depth versus flexibility. Botpress gives you a visual agent-building studio, knowledge bases, and an autonomous engine you can wire up to almost anything, including ecommerce platforms, but you're building that integration yourself rather than getting one out of the box. The two-part billing (conversation quota plus a separately metered AI Spend pool with auto-recharge) also means the sticker price understates real cost once a store is doing meaningful volume.
Best for: technical teams that want full control over conversation design and are willing to build the ecommerce logic themselves rather than buy it pre-built.
The verdict: who should actually switch from Chatbase
If you picked Chatbase because you needed a flexible AI agent and didn't have an ecommerce-specific option in mind, the question isn't whether Chatbase is good, it's whether a horizontal tool is still the right fit now that you know what you actually need. Chatbase, Botpress, and to a lesser extent Tidio and Intercom are all general-purpose agents that can be pointed at a store, but none of them start from a product catalog the way an ecommerce-native platform does.
For most ecommerce stores specifically, that's the gap that matters. Molin AI is the only tool on this list built ecommerce-first, with native connectors for Shopify, Shoprenter, UNAS, and Shoper, and pricing that scales by conversation and catalog size instead of by message credits or per-seat fees. If you're on one of those platforms and want AI that already knows your products without a separate integration project, that's the switch worth making. If you specifically need Botpress's level of custom conversation design or Intercom's Fin AI Agent, budget for the engineering time or the per-resolution fees that come with them.
